Contra-Indications |
When to be advised not to use far infrared saunas by some authorities |
Adrenal suppression |
Treatment strategies for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) include the use of inhaled corticosteroids. These inhaled agents have been shown to reduce inflammation, improve symptoms, and reduce exacerbations in patients with asthma or COPD. Adverse effects of inhaled corticosteroids include adrenal suppression, accelerated bone mineral loss, easy bruisability, cataract formation, glaucoma, and oral thrush; however, these effects tend to be minimal and acceptable |
Chronically hot and swollen joints |
These joints may respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind |
Disease |
Do not attempt to self-treat any disease with far infrared without direct supervision of a physician |
Enclosed infections (be they dental, in joints or in any other tissues) |
Vigorous heating of any kind |
Haemophiliacs |
Do not want to increase blood flow |
Haemorrhage |
Do not want to increase blood flow |
Implanted Silicone or prostheses for nose or ear replacement |
These may be warmed by the infrared rays. Since silicone melts at over 200 C (392 F) it should not be adversely affected |
Medications |
When using prescription drugs, you should seek the advice of your Doctor for possible changes to the drugs effects when the body is exposed to Infrared waves or elevated body temperatures. Diuretics, barbiturates and beta-blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Some over the counter drugs such as antihistamines may cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke. If you’re at all unsure refrain from using the product until you have completed your prescribed course. |
Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any surgical implants |
These generally reflect infrared rays and thus are not heated by this system (you should always consult your surgeon prior to using Infrared Thermal system) certainly the usage must be discontinued if you experience any pain near your implant |
Multiple sclerosis |
It means that the body's natural defences are actually attacking its own myelin, using far infrared increases your immune system |
Pain |
People do not experience pain using far infrared thermal systems unless such is contra-indicated. If you do, the use of radiant heat is clearly inappropriate for you at that time and you must stop usage. |
Pregnant or suspect you may be |
Discontinue use. It hardly seems worth any minimal risk they may present |
Recent (acute) joint injury |
It should not be heated for the first 48 hours after an injury or until the hot and swollen symptoms subside |
Systemic lupus erythematosus |
Lupus is one of many disorders of the immune system known as auto-immune diseases. In auto-immune diseases, the immune system turns against parts of the body it is designed to protect. This leads to inflammation and damage to various body tissues. Lupus can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. Although people with the disease may have many different symptoms, some of the most common ones include extreme fatigue, painful or swollen joints (arthritis), unexplained fever, skin rashes, and kidney problems |
